Built by someone tired of throwing food away
It’s the morning of Halloween 2025 and my family will be over in the evening for some pizza and trick or treating. I opened my pantry to see if I had anything that I could make that night. Immediately, two things were clear:
- I was ordering pizza that night.
- Some of my cans were so expired, they had now formed an unknown black colony underneath them. I needed to hide my shame.
Once I was done, guiltily I stared at the now full 96 gallon trash bin relieved that I would avoid a maternal lecture, but left wondering if I was the only one with this problem.
How Pantidy Started
Pantidy started from an idea I had nearly a decade ago. I loved to cook, but often didn’t have the time to find the recipes that matched the ingredients I had in my pantry. To make matters worse, I’m the type of person with a strong “Out of sight, out of mind” vulnerability. It’s great for avoiding problems, but terrible for keeping track of my pantry.
After the Halloween 2025 incident, I knew I needed to make a change. I was tired of wasting such an embarassing amount of food when I could have alternatively donated it, for example. I was also tired of my default being take out when a fresh, home cooked meal would have been a way better, cheaper alternative.
Fast forward to Christmas of 2025 where I put in my notice at my Engineering Lead job and decided to go all-in on this dream of mine. I locked myself in my office for months and got to work building a tool that would help save me money.
Several months later, Pantidy was launched.
